The Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University invites applications for the direction of an academic graduate program in Global Thought. Reporting to the Director of the CGT, the incumbent is responsible for supervising a pan-university, interdisciplinary Master’s degree program.
Responsibilities:
Acts as primary academic advisor for the MA students, advising students, both current and prospective, on academic trajectory and program requirements, available courses, and university resources.
Working in close collaboration with CGT faculty and staff, advises on thesis development and is responsible for allocation of thesis advisors, including direct communication with each advisor and individual follow up with student on topic and research plans, and assumes responsibility of supervising student progress intellectually and administratively in what is an intensive nine-month course to degree.
The incumbent will guide students in exploring global connections and commonalities in contemporary politics, economics, society, and culture, helping them tailor their courses and thesis research to their intellectual and professional interests.
She/he may help originate new courses and, where appropriate, take part in an instructional capacity each semester.
Curates an annual faculty/advisor/student conference where students present their MA essays with feedback from advisors, faculty, and peers.
Handles individual student concerns in collaboration with other CGT staff, making issues known to the CGT Chair and Faculty Director as they arise.
Manages and executes admissions, application reviews, and all admissions decisions in consultation with the CGT Faculty and its Chair, the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GSAS) admissions office; administrates all aspects of application review including allocation of financial aid; reads and evaluates all applications; manages enrollment and registration procedures in close collaboration with GSAS.
Manages and develops day-to-day and overall administrative, operational, and financial components of the program, including working with the CGT Director on budgets and spending for the program. She/he has primary responsibility for producing program evaluation metrics regarding admissions and recruitment, curricular engagement, and student satisfaction, among other areas. Coordinates events for the MA students during the year.
Directs program publicity, outreach, and recruitment of prospective students, and helps oversee an alumni network. Tasks include, but are not limited to, writing content for the MA program websites and university publications, managing admissions correspondence, application review, admissions decisions, and registration in consultation with the MA faculty subcommittee and the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GSAS). He/she monitors student records for degree requirements; serves as liaison for students with campus offices; maintains departmental records for master program students; and handles other tasks as required.
