Spanish and Portuguese Department / College of Letters & Science – Humanities and Fine Arts
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Santa Barbara, seeks a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in the field of border and migration studies in the Americas, with a starting date of July 1, 2019. Particular areas of emphasis include the literature and culture of the U.S. Mexico border, U.S. Latino/a border culture, culture and migration of indigenous communities from Central and South America, and media (old and new) and their interface with issues of the border, identity, diaspora, and intercultural exchanges. The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.
Duties include teaching and advising at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and maintaining an active research program. In light of UCSB’s official designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution, the Department is seeking a scholar who can expend and solidify our curricular focus on minority cultures.
Applicants should have native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English and knowledge of an indigenous language, if relevant to their research. Evidence of outstanding research (or research potential) and teaching ability at the undergraduate and graduate levels are essential.
The minimum requirement in order to be considered an applicant is completion of all the requirements for a Ph.D. in Spanish, Comparative Literature, or a related field (or equivalent degree) except the dissertation (or equivalent) at the time of application.
